Today I would like to share my Do's and Don'ts that I do to take care of my hair wearing braids and keeping my braids looking refreshed and new. I'm not an expert of hair, but I do know what works and doesn't work from my experience. So take this from someone who wears braids pretty much all the time when she is not rocking her other styles.
1) Make sure when you are getting your hair braided make sure your "baby hairs" are not braided tightly. Now I learned from this letting braiders braid your hair too tightly can cause thinning hairline. Now, when braiders are braiding other places around your head if it's too tight please say something. If you are paying any amount of money you should get the proper care and respect.
2) Make sure you moisturize your hair and braids. Oil your scalp at least 2 times a week to keep your scalp from not drying and being neglected. Use a braid sheen spray or lotion to apply to your hair every day if needed to keep them neat and clean. Every two weeks I deep the ends of my braids in boiling hot water and split them into sections and leave them in the water for 60 seconds.
3) When getting braids for the first 3 days leave them down. So they can loosen up over time and not pull against your hairline. You can do easy and cute styles during this time.
4) Wash your scalp. I do have a tutorial how I wash my scalp while wearing braids. But here's an overview what I do.

4) Wash your scalp. I do have a tutorial how I wash my scalp while wearing braids. But here's an overview what I do.
- Place a small amount of shampoo/conditioner (whichever you prefer) into the palm of your hands mainly at the fingertips.
- Rub together to lather.
- Apply to your scalp
- Massage using circular motions
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water
- Use a leave-in conditioner afterward
- Dry with a towel or a t-shirt
- Let it air dry (will take almost 6 hours to air dry)
- Then apply your oils to the scalp and some to braids.
5) When taking a shower or going to bed wear a silk bonnet or a scarf to tie up at night this will prevent any frizz.
6) To prevent itchy scalp. Use tea tree oil or braid spray that has tea tree oil in it.
7) When styling your braids please don't pull them in a tight bun or ponytail.
8) Don't leave them in too long. If you leave them in for too long this will cause them to lock up so unless you want locs I suggest to take them down. If you are wearing box braids that are a bigger leave them in for 1 month, medium-size will last for 2-3 months depending on your hair grows and how manage them. For micro braids, they last for 3-4 months.
9) Remember the bigger the braids the shorter the lifespan.
10) Take down your hair your properly and give your hair and scalp at least 2 weeks to recover from the last style before a new install or perm.
I hope you hair divas enjoyed my tips and I will see you in my next post.
